- You decide. Take your time, ask questions and only go ahead if the cover and the premium suit you. You’re under no obligation to accept a quote.
Comprehensive vs third-party car insurance: what’s the difference?
In South Africa, you’ll usually come across three main types of car insurance. Comprehensive cover generally covers damage to your own car from an accident, theft or hijacking, fire, and weather such as hail or flooding. It also covers damage you cause to other people’s cars or property. Third-party, fire and theft covers damage you cause to someone else’s car or property and your own car if stolen or damaged by fire. Third-party only pays for damage you cause to other people’s vehicles or property, and nothing for your own car. Exactly what’s included differs from policy to policy, so always check the details.Which type of cover makes sense for you?
A few honest questions can point you in the right direction:- Is your car financed? Your bank or finance house will usually require comprehensive cover until it’s settled.
- Could you replace your car if it were stolen or written off?
- How much is the car worth?
- What excess could you afford?
Car insurance for young drivers
You may be under 25 or only recently licensed. Insurers price cover on risk, and they see drivers with less time on the road as higher risk. Be honest about who drives the car, think about the car you choose, park safely at night, ask about tracking devices and driving courses, and look after your claims record. Many policies also charge an additional excess for young or newly licensed drivers. What affects your car insurance quote?
- your age, how long you’ve had your licence, and your licence code
- your claims and insurance history
- the make, model, year and value of the car
- where you live and where the car is parked overnight
- what you use the car for, such as private use or business travel
- the car’s security, such as an immobiliser or tracker
- the type of cover, the excess you choose and any optional extras
What to have ready when the partner is in touch
- your ID number and driver’s licence details
- the car’s make, model, year and registration number
- whether the car is financed, and with whom
- where the car is parked during the day and at night
- details of any claims or accidents in the last few years
- your current policy details, if you’re switching
